There are programs for sale on the net for cataloging CD/video/book
collections. My one big problem with the one I have has been getting
data into it. It can read stuff off the CD, and get track info from
CDDB, but that still requires opening every case and putting the CD
into the drive.

Ooh, if I could take my palm and a reader out to my CD rack, and just
scan the bar codes, that would be GREAT! Where did you get the reader?
