Well, I can offer that an academic spin would be that YAPC is meant to be a low-cost conference designed to attract people, especially students, who would not normally be able to attend a conference of this type; having YAPC at MIT would encourage the MIT community to attend and to learn from and be exposed to the larger Perl community. I'm not sure what an industrial spin would be. I'll look into what services might be provided by MIT Conference Services on Monday; their web page is uninformative.
