Sendmail is indeed a complex beast, but your symptoms look a lot like
a very common problem. Check the web page at:
http://www.sendmail.org/~ca/email/relayingdenied.html
Which will tell you that you need to explicitely allow relaying via
one of several methods. I've historically just added entries to
/etc/mail/relay-domains.
