and portland OR was named for portland ME. the story i heard were two
explorer types were selecting a name and they were from portland and
boston. somehow they had a contest and the portland guy won. imagine if
there were two boston cities of decent size? as it is, i have a
conjecture that the pair of portlands may be the largest pair of cities
based on some metric like the size of the smaller one in the pair. there
are many springfields but most are very small. any other largish
duplicate cities you can think of in the states?
