Thanks Ben and Steve.   Yes, we're being forced to repackage some code as 
rpm's by corporate decree.   It's a fairly small one-time effort for a 
simple system, so that module appealed to me as a quick way of getting the 
job done without having to delve too deeply into the mysteries of spec files 
and rpmbuild.   And yes, I realize that there's a chance that we'll get into 
more complexity and have to go beyond what that module provides at some 
point.   At this point it seems like a good place to start, with a chance 
that that's all we'll need.  The CPANPLUS module didn't seem like quite what 
we need since much of what is to be packaged is not CPAN code.
