Girls' interest in math, French likely to wane regardless of absence of boys, study shows Female students in single-sex classrooms are not any more confident or motivated to learn than their counterparts at co-ed high schools, according to a new study. Students at an all-girls' public school were just as likely to lose interest in math and French as girls who went to class with boys. "What we found was a deterioration in motivation among both groups," said Roch Chouinard, a professor of educational psychology at the Universite de Montreal. His findings challenge the popular assumption that dividing classes by gender boosts confidence and academic success among both sexes. Twice a year for three years, 220 girls filled out questionnaires stating their academic goals and level of interest in math and French. One of Mr. Chouinard's previous studies showed females fared slightly better in math at all-girls' private schools than at mixed ones.
