Would help to know what terminal you're using. "on my mac" could be anything. I
think the standard Mac terminal emulator is pretty awful and has caused people
numerous problems.

Can you try installing e.g. urxvt or xterm and trying with that ? If it works
with either of those then the problem is with your terminal emulator software.
If you're in luck, somebody on this ML will know how to fix it. :-)
