after a second support request in our cozy IRC channel I looked into
the issue again and found the following article:

It describes how OS X 10.6.3 changed the libcurses workings and with
it broke all curses apps depending on the old
behaviour.
Now the question is if we are going to do anything with this knowledge
(if possible, I haven't researched, or discussed it yet) or if we await
Apple's response to the issue at hand.
