Rob,
The thing is, you can only use Terminal with the screen reader that supports
it (JAWS, window-Eyes, Hal, Mobile Speak Pocket, Mobile speak Smartphone,
etc.). USB is primarily used for activeSync. I have a hypothesis: if the
activeSync connection is set to connections other than USB, then it will
allow you to use USB as a terminal connection (you must select between
serial, Bluetooth, Ethernet and InfraRed, not USB).
Cheers,
Joseph P.S. could anybody who has enough experience with screen readers that
use UsB connection test this out?

I'm glad JD brought this up. I was going to ask about why you can't use USB
to connect. My computer that I use (the hand held one i told you about)
doesn't have serial port, and in the case of the PK especially, i'd have a
really hard time finding an adapter or getting the screen reader set up
through the built in keyboard for Bluetooth.
