I agree with you. I am about to send off my PK for servicing because of a flash disk problem but it also has a CF slot problem. When it comes back I would like to think that they tell me what they did. This is useful to the user because then if you send the machine in again and they tell you what is wrong before fixing it and it is something you know has been fixed before you can go back in your records and see how long ago it was last fixed.

BN Classic and PK user.

Subject: Re: [Braillenote] Braille display breaking down

Hi Rebecca,
Thank you for posting on this thread. My unit just got back from
the shop
last Friday, having just had this same problem. Its Braille got
very flakey
very quickly, with strange symbols showing up, alternating
between nice
crisp Braille and very faint Braille, and so on. Ultimately the
Braille
display quit altogether, at which point I frantically called
Humanware, got
the RMA and sent it in.

When I talked to Humanware last Tuesday, someone in customer
service told me
that four back planes on the main board were replaced, and other
things were
fixed as well. I have no idea why the Braille display problem
occurred, as
the main board was fairly new, having just been replaced last
November/December when I sent the BN in for an SD card slot
problem. I can
tell you that I'm very careful to make sure that the unit isn't
dropped or
knocked around. So I'm somewhat mystified by this. I really hope
this isn't
an indication of questionable hardware quality assurance.

While I'm on the subject of repairs, I want to mention that if I
hadn't
pressed the customer service rep for details, I'd have had no
idea what was
done to fix the problem. My unit got back last Friday while I was
out of
town, and when I opened the box tonight and checked out the unit,
I noticed
no print statement or Braille document describing the nature of
the problem
or what was done to fix it. I'd like to suggest to Humanware
that such a
document be included when a unit is returned after servicing. It
seems to me
that (1) such a document would be useful for tracking purposes in
case the
problem should recur, God forbid, and (2), it's just good
customer service
policy. Anybody out there concur with me? How about it, folks?

Tom

Alana:

It sounds like the back plane on the Braille display must have
got
damaged a bit. Do you recall having dropped it, or having had it
fall
off a table, or collide with something by accident? I know
symptoms
really well, I'm afraid; and once it starts to do that, all you
can do
is send it back to the manufacturer or vendor for servicing and
repair.
I'm sorry to have to tell you such bad news ... it's not a cheap
fix.

Hi List,
Can anyone please tell me what is possiblely going on with my
braille
display?
Tonight I turned on my Bn and the Bn said,
"Main menu."
I pressed a thumb key by accident and the Bn said,
"Wordprocessor."
I had both speech and the display on at the same time. The
braille
display had all these symbols for the grade 2 contraction "For."
I kept
pressing the thumb key (which was the advance key) and checked
the
display. Sometimes the display was ok. I turned the Bn off,
then on
again. The display said "Main menu." I pressed the advanced
thumb key
again to see what would happen with the display. I had a dot 4
and w as
part of the word "Wordprocessor."
Instead of the letter p appearing on the display I had an m
appearing on
the display. The interesting thing was that the dot 3 on the m
was going
down so I had dots 1-4 and the rest of the word "wordprocessor"
on the
displayddI hope I am making sense here. I gave it a reset.
That didn't
fix the problem. Actually, I gave the display a clean with a
dry cloth
before I pressed the reset button. I tried a 1-2-3 reset, but
that didn't
work either. Next I tried a 4-5-6 reset. That also didn't
work. I tried
to exercise the display. The display didn't exercise properly
because the
cs didn't come up. Instead dots 1 to 6 were up. I went back to
the main
menu. I turned the Bn off, then on again. When I pressed the
advance
thumb key again the speech said "wordprocessor" and the the
grade 2
contraction for the word "for" came up again. The cells were in
some
groups and the groups were gapped. Amongst these cells were
some qs I
think.
I turned the braille display on and off. I also turned the unit
off and
on. I went to the item wordprocessor. This time I had the
grade 2 st
symbol instead of the dots 4-5 as part of the word
"wordprocessor." I
waited to find out what would happen. After what seemed like a
few
seconds the dot 3 of that symbol went down and I was left with
the dot 4
as part of that word. This time I turned the Bn off for a few
minutes (i
think) and tried it again. I think I still had a few problems.
For now
the display works, but I just wanted to know what was going on.
The
problem I have described above, has been experienced in all of
the cells
on the display.
I appreciate any help anyone can give on this matter.
Thanks,
Alana
