Yes, about two weeks ago I wrote the list saying, in so many words, I was
disturbed that this had been put into BN already since here in the UK no
formal consultation has yet taken place and, so far as I can understand,
"committees still have to make final decisions . . .."
I'd personally like to know HW's take on exactly why they introduced it at
this time. Whilst I like to have good, readable Braille, it's not the time
of life for me (or many others) to start learning a whole new code - and I
am not going to! <Grins>
Please, if there are any more chats with HW staff, could someone please ask
them to explain their thinking here . . .. Surely resources could have been
put into other areas, such as those which have been "promised" for a long
time!

I have looked at articles and features about this code and it's my
understanding the code isn't at all like the Grade 2 English braille
currently used and it isn't like the Nemeth Code for math nor is it like
the computer braille code. The UEB is a totally different animal and if
it's adopted, (heaven forbid), all of us will have to learn braille all
over again. It will be much more difficult to learn and cumbersome to
use. The code will take up more space and it's the weirdest thing I've
ever seen. Not only that, the rules haven't been finalized and there are
several committees working on them.
I know that the currently used math braille is different in the US and
UK, but I don't think the literary braille or the music braille is so
different. I have read some books and music which were brailled by RNIB.
The bottom line is this: UEB is a step backward and it's so complex that
in my opinion it will hurt braille literacy because it will be too hard
to learn.
I'm thankful the BN will still support the current grade 2 braille and
computer braille.

just before I went away so I didn't have any computer access while away.
To answer your question UEB is still grade two Braille. The idea behind
it
is to get all English speaking countries using the same Braille code,
but
the US hasn't taken it up. Before UEB was introduced Australia used a
different code to New Zealand so we couldn't swap any Braille between
the
two countries because we couldn't understand everything in each others
code.
Now if all English speaking countries use UEB then it would make it
easier
for students going overseas to study because they wouldn't have to learn
a
hole new code for the country they are in. With electronic Braille it
doesn't matter as much as long as the computer can convert between the
codes.

Do you mean grade 2 braille is no longer produced in your country? How
terrible! Just think of how much space and paper a book would take
using
this awful code! I hope the US doesn't replace the grade 2 braille code
