Hi Kylie,
Nice job on analyzing the cause of your problem. Indeed it is most likely
caused by an inadvertent chord. I occasionally have similar issues when
brailing very fast, particularly if I've just finished some kind of edit.
Qwerty users don't experience this because they aren't pressing so many keys
at once. The problem is made worse when you are working in Braille only
because you may not know exactly when it happened. Well, if you were really
analytical and looked at the Braille display you could figure out pretty
closely when it happened, but I for one am not that methodical particularly
if I'm preparing to give a presentation or facing some other deadline.
so: all you can really do is try to avoid resting on the space bar. If you
know the term, play the space bar with a staccato touch.
Now, if you'll indulge an old man; we had a similar problem with the rubber
brain technology on the VersaBraille. I remember getting several frantic
calls from customers who were suffering from a similar issue. We build a
mode for writing that block the chord feature until the user turned it off.
In theory it was a good idea and I really liked it but I don't know how many
of our customers really understood and used it. When it was on, a space
could only be seen as a space. If the user wanted to enter a chord he had
to turn it off.
I suspect today's machine is smart enough to say if this feature is on and
the user doesn't touch the keyboard for x seconds turn it off. Turn it back
on after receiving x keystrokes in by seconds. I am not a beta tester for
hw; so this idea is just being thrown out there for the benefit of the
engineering staff that reads it. Please don't use this list to debate the
prose and cons of the idea as it could get off topic very quickly.

Subject: [Braillenote] PK freezing
Hi everyone
Every so often while typing, my PK will freeze for no apparent reason. The
current line of text will be displayed on the Braille display but I cannot
input anything else. The joystick and the touch cursor are the only things
which respond at all, so I can move my cursor along the line, or move up
and
down a line, but none of the navigation keys or keyboard commands will
work.
I can only assume that I am typing too fast for the PK or that I have
pressed a key combination which triggers the problem. As I am typing at
speed whenever it happens I cannot pinpoint the key combination (if any).
I
usually solve the problem by several minutes of frantic keyboard activity,
pressing the Exit, Return to Main Menu, Enter Announce Key Mode, and Move
forward and back a character/word/paragraph commands. As I am usually in a
lecture when it happens and need to get the unit working again in a hurry,
I
perform all these commands rapidly and again don't know which unlocks the
unit. I have had most success with the Announce Key Mode command, but must
press it many times before anything happens.
I have tried a standard reset and it does solve the problem, but it is
always the very last resort because I invariably have unsaved data that I
don't wish to lose.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? I am running Version 7.2 build
47,
and before anyone suggests upgrading to 7.5 as a solution, I had the same
problem in 6.1 and it was not fixed in either 7 or 7.2.
I have the feeling that it is a PK specific problem because I never
experienced anything like this on my Classic.
Any help in learning how to prevent the freeze in the first place or
unfreezing the unit would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Kylie
