I used road runner's dial up a long time ago when I was away from home
on a laptop and to do that required a special dialer program from them
and for the service to be activated.

You might be able to work around that thought. I would try prefixing
your username with: aolnet/ent.
Like aolnet/[email protected]
lower case aolnet, a forward slash, lowercase e n t, a period, then
your username.

Ideally you need some way of running a custom dial up script as
described in that page for getting it working in Linux.

I'll have to read the manual to see how much of that you can do on the
braillenote but anyone else thinking of helping will likely find that
useful.
