So, low and behold, if I use the cable that has two usb plugs, with the western digital 500 gb hard drive, it works just fine. I just got it to show up, so I thought before I post something, I better check it out, and yes, I was able to open a file, and read and edit it. Since I know, that Mike Tindell and Sarai from tech support have been trying to help me find a way to use the hard drives, I hope they see this e-mail.
