Hi,
The other possibility would be an incomplete email receiving
session right before the complete send/receive
session is done, which could often result with less number of
messages on the second attempt.

It sounds almost like you are subscribed to an email list twice,
maybe
with two addresses, one of which is forwarding its mail to the
other?
Could that be the case? Maybe you have a work email given to you
by
your employer, but you set that address to forward everything to
your
primary address?
