I am strongly inclined to go with a hardware issue. It sounds like
there is some problem between the battery connection and the Apex,
since you say that often you can only get things working when the
adapter is connected. That seems to indicate that the Apex is not
getting power from the battery, which is why not even a reset will
help. As Joseph said, see if you can get a replacement battery and/or
send the unit in for servicing. I hate to have to do that to you as I
know how hard it can be to be without these devices, but yours is the
first case I have heard of like this so I doubt it is software
related. Sorry I cannot bring any better news...
