 When I check word count I get the message cursor is not on a
word.  When I go dots 1 5 6 with space I get page 1 column 1 so
the document is blank!
However, when I put it in the VS I can read it!

Definitely, assuming you have ks9.1.  When you open the file and
request a word count (space-i, w), do you get 0 words?
