Carrying two pieces of equipment: Yes, you are carrying two computers. However, especially where you have an iPhone, you would be carrying the phone with you anyway, whether or not the apex was along for the ride. When the apex is present, why not take advantage of its capability to act as a terminal?
Battery: this is a very good point, since the battery in both devices is drained faster by bluetooth. However, many users of iTouches have said that having bluetooth on does not reduce their battery life by much at all.
