Hi Linda,

The length of time you exercise the Braille display is up to you, as
I've heard many different thoughts on that topic. As for the purpose,
it's mainly to get little dirt particles that might have gotten in the
display dislodged and out of there, making the display's reading
clearer. Hope this helps!
