I could be wrong, but I don't think the Pearl camera will work with a Mac.
I think you have to have Windows and Open Book to use that device.  I have
one and love it!  Open book lets you save to lots of different file formats,
so you could easily save files in a format that your Apex can read.

Apex compatibility depends on the screen reader on Windows. For
instance, jfw is supposed to work well, while nvda does not, at least
not for me. Macs, though, work out of the box with the apex, except
for the bug that makes it nearly impossible to type in grade 2.
Hopefully they will fix this soon, though.
There is a lot more to the mac vs windows debate, and I suggest you
look into both operating systems regarding what you plan to do on the
computer and make your choice from there. However, because it comes
down to operating system and screen reader, any laptop will work if
loaded with the right software.
