My solution as a Mac owner is to have a separate device for OCR. Remember that Freedom Scientific makes the Pearl camera available in stand-alone form, as the Sara CE. I have the original Sara device.
Not my choice, but remember you can also run OCR software under Windows using virtualisation on a Mac, or better, get Serotek's scanning solution or a third-party one (but somewhat harder), like Abbyy FineReader for the Mac.
