I have been successfully scheduling in next year's planner by:
opening the planner
press space with dot 4 to move forward by month
locate the date I want once I have reached the appropriate month by using
the move forward or backward by day or week commands
hit enter on the day I want
schedule the appointment.

Hope this helps.
