Hi List,
I need to make some corrections to this post. I had to type it really quickly,
and not until now, after reading the email that came back to me on the List,
did I realize that it sounds quite unclear. I usually don't go back and
re-read what I've written, which is the reason I didn't catch this until I read
my own email which came back to me. Here are the corrections. My first two
sentences contradict each other in a way. My original intent had been to say
that Grade 2 couldn't be used directly in an Original Message, but on second
thought, you can do this by switching to Grade 2 every time you want to input
something, and then switch back to Computer Braille when you're done with your
input; the Oringinal Message will stay in Computer Braille, even if you change
it to Grade 2, but your input will be in Grade 2 if you've changed it. The
BACKSPACE with dots 1-2 is only a BT option, I believe, as I wasn't able to
find any equivalent when I looked quickly through the QT manual, but going to
the "Grade of Braille for Keyboard Entry" option in the Options Menu will allow
a Braille Grade change regardless of model. From the "Braille Grade" poompt,
you can press B to change to Grade 2, and then C to return to Computer Braille
(pressing A changes to Grade 1). I find it best to return to Computer Braille
after inputing in Grade 2 because the Original Message will stay in Computer
Braille despite a change in Braille grade, and I would find it confusing if,
for example, I had switched to Grade 2, but my text wasn't in Grade 2; Braille
grade indicators show up on the Braille display to let you know what grade you
are in, so switching back to Computer Braille produces a Computer Braille
indicator to let you know you're in Computer Braille. For me personally, even
if I notice a change from, for example, Grade 2 to Grade 1, I would still find
it a little misleading if I were following the indicators, and nothing appeared
to let me know of a Grade change. Anyway, you can manually switch each time,
but this can be tedious, especially if you have a lot you want to input in
Grade 2 in the Uriginal Message and in different places within that message;
that's why I think I hadn't thought of it when writing the first post below.
However, the part about writing before and after the Original Message is
correct. A quick note, though. I find placing your cursor on any character
and checking its shape a great way if I am using Grade 1/2 or Computer Braille.
By default, these items, which are found in the Options Menu under Braille
Display Options, are set to dots 7 and 8 for standard Braille (Grade 1 and 2)
and just dot 8 for Computer Braille. If you just leave them at their defaults,
putting a cursor on a character will let you know if you're in standard or
Computer Braille. If you're using this method, and you're not sure if you're
in Grade 1 or 2, type a contraction such as the "ar" contraction (dots 3-4-5);
if you're in Grade 2, it will be accepted, but in Grade 1, you'll just get an
Error tone. Sorry about the inaccuracy of the first post, and I hope this
helps.
