Kim the batteries are wired in so yes you do have to send it back.  However,
18 months is just a rough guestimate about battery life.  It makes
assumptions that you will be using the BN 24 7, probably.  It would be more
convenient if you could change the batteries yourself, but that's the way it
is.  It's a good product and quite versatile.
