That error usually indicates either a bad username or bad password.  Most 
POP3 services don't tell you whether the authentication is successful 
until you have supplied both, for security reasons, and then only usually 
tell you that there was an error rather than what the error was, again for 
security reasons.  In particular, these techniques prevent dictionary 
attacks.  Therefore, from directory of services, simply re-enter your 
username and password.  Even if they appear correct, you could be missing 
the password, or the username might have been in the wrong case, etc., 
etc., etc.  Just retype them, save the record, hit a reset for good 
measure, and try again.  That's what I did (after thinking I'd been locked 
out of my own system), and it worked fine.  It is indeed a strange 
behaviour of the BrailleNote to show one thing in settings and send 
something quite different...
