If I'm understanding you right, and you want to go outside, you wouldn't want 
dial up connections.  You'd be wanting a wireless card.  You wouldn't need to 
buy an external modem.  If you're using cable, I would think you would need a 
wireless router.  I may be wrong about this.  Am I understanding you correctly?
