I don't think you really have to use that phrase to talk down the
battery.  I have my vn for two years now and have always just read a
book till it says: critical and further till it stops.  The main thing
is to totally run it down before recharging. Who cares how long it
takes, as long as the purpose is accomplished.  One's time and the
unit's battery is definitely applied more productively by reading it to
minus zero.

I wonder if there is not some way that Pdi could change that "I'm
talking until my battery goes flat" thing.
It does tend to make you go nuts after a while, and you can't use it for
anything else while it's going.
I have had it go on for 15 or 20 minutes even after the "battery is
critical" prompt.
I wish we could make it play music or do something other than just say
that same dumb line over and over again!
