One of the people with whom I serve on a non-profit board was having some
very serious medical problems for a year or so until she finally found a
doctor who recognized what was going on.  He told her to cut out all
aspartame, which she did, and immediately saw her symptoms begin to
disappear.  She's totally fine now.  IIRC, she was misdiagnosed with
multiple sclerosis at one point.  A couple of the scarier things that were
happening was swelling in her brain and blurred vision with red, swollen
eyes.  After searching and searching, she finally found that a large number
of people, mostly women, apparently have a metabolism that produces
formaldehyde when they ingest aspartame.  She drank quite a lot (she
wouldn't even admit how many) diet Cokes every day, which I suppose were
slowly pickling her, so to speak.  After she told the board this story, I
decided to steer clear of diet drinks, which I had only started drinking a
coupel of years ago to cut down carbs.

Now she's after the CEO of Monsanto and the diet soft drink companies...
who'd better watch out.  She's one of the most effective people I've ever
met.

P.S.  Just did a little searching and found that some even blame aspartame
for "Gulf War Syndrome," because donated soft drinks sat in the hot desert
for a long time...
