I remember reading somewhere that Hubbard made a bet with another SF writer about it. He bet that he could create a false religion to make money, "like psychology", not long before Scientology started. I wish I knew where I read it, though.
He came up with Dianetics first though didn't he? Which is 'like psychology' :)
