I watched the first half of this last night. I guess my first reaction was: it doesn't suck. I was a huge fan of the original show though I don't think I've seen an episode in 20 years (haven't picked up the DVD collection yet). I thought most of the changes were OK. I thought the idea that the Cylons/Vipers/etc from the original show were from a war 20-40 years in the past was a really cute idea. I liked them using the original theme music during the big ceremonial flyby.
I could do without the sex scenes between Baltar and Six though. That didn't add anything. And I thought Baltar's character was pretty pathetic. I was kinda hoping he would die in the big explosion. Estranged father and son? Bah. Starbuck was pretty cool though. Don't know when I'll get a chance to see Part 2, though.
