It's ringing some distant bells for me too. Do you know if the book your GM
was straight fantasy, or could it have been post-apocalyptic? Could they be
a from a book by the guy who wrote a series of stories and/or novels in the
late '60s or early '70s that took place after a nuclear holocaust, where
there were some horsemen who had horses that had become at least
semi-sentient and also psychic, and the horsemen and their horses
communicated through telepathy? As I recall, all of the place names were
"phonetic re-imaginings" of how to spell existing places in... as I
remember it, mostly in the U.S., some fairly easy to figure out and some I
never could work through. This series of novels was one of the primary
influences on the original version of the RPG GammaWorld, along with some
stuff by Andre Norton, Brian Aldiss, and others. Maybe it was somebody like
Sterling Lanier, or Robert Adams (I seem to remember a series of books with
something about Horseclans in the titles)? I haven't read much in that
genre since the early 1980s...

I hope that helps a little.
