Gautam Mukunda quoted from someone on ABC

They include a belief that government is a mechanism
to solve the nation's problems; that more taxes on
corporations and the wealthy are good ways to cut the
deficit and raise money for social spending and don't
have a negative affect on economic growth; and that
emotional examples of suffering (provided by unions or
consumer groups) are good ways to illustrate economic
statistic stories.

In my opinion taxes are a way to distribute a countries collectively earned wealth more evenly thereby providing a mechanism to protect, educate and care for the majority and extra care for those that cannot take care of themselves, without totally depriving the happy few of the niceties and luxuries their wealth brings with it. I think that is an objective most people loose sight of when arguing taxes and what is done with them. :o)
