Some jerks are trying to impose a patent on the jpeg format. Is there any "generic" jpeg-like format, like the PNG to replace GIF or the OGG to replace MP3?
The format was developed by JPEG, which is a part of the ISO.
The ISO is unlikely to want to impose a patent (and probably *can't* based on its legal structure alone).
I wouldn't rush out and replace anything yet...
