Friends,
From the BBC World Service "Reporting Religion" program today comes
news of a document entitled "The Gift of Scripture" from the Bishops
of England, Scotland and Wales that calls upon UK Catholics to cease
taking various parts of the Bible literally:

The story will be available at that URL until next Saturday.
To give you an idea how rational they're being (in my estimation),
the Bishops write, "We should not expect to find in Scripture full
scientific accuracy or complete historical precision..." and "In
order to believe that every passage of the Bible is the literal
truth, you have to suspend your critical faculties. You have to
suspend the God-given ability to reason."
Music to my unapologetically liberal Christian ears.
Scotsman.com's headline belies the generally balanced coverage of the
story: "Church stops believing in Bible".
