As I understand it (and I could be wrong):
- Splitting Tour 4 was not so much an experiment as a necessity
        i.e. it wasn't split because there were enough bids, but bids
were found to enable the split
- I don't know if Colchester could host 3 divisions (A&B&Women) ?
- Mansfield could host 3 divisions, but the TDs didn't want to (for
various reasons)

I agree that possibly, splitting 2005 Tour 4 wasn't the best idea, but
ONLY because both of the Tour Titles were, for the first time ever, not
a forgone conclusion, and people wanted to see the finals.

In theory, the A Tour was supposed to be split out from 'the rest' so
that it could be 'better provided for' (the definitions of which are
somewhat dependent upon your personal preferences).

IMHO, this has still not yet happened, mostly because the Tours have not
yet effectively been split.
I guess that it all depends on what you want from your venues, but for
me, the combination of format, scheduling and facilities is still a far
cry from what I'd (personally) like it to be.

>From my experiences of A Tour 4:
- it was good to have spare pitches, so that you could relocate if
necessary
        (some got a bit waterlogged in the crazy amount of rain we had
on Saturday);
- the lack of cones, scoreboards and waterbottles sucked
        (Hannah has already explained the why of this);
- pitchside water provision was better than T2, due to a lower number of
consumers;
- the format is OK, but the scheduling still needs resolution
        (3*1.5hrs+cap back to back is still a bit hardcore!);
- the majority of people were able to find dry shelter in the clubhouse
when not playing
        (we wouldn't all fit if there were 3 divisions);
- the Open Final starting only half an hour (?) after the other playoff
games meant a lot of people missed much of it
        (scheduling issue);
- the Women's final being at the same time as the other playoff games
meant a lot of people missed much of it.
        (scheduling issue);

And from logical assumption:
- there's half-a-chance that the showers coped better with the number of
people in attendence;

I'm personally in favour of the suggestion of splitting further - A, B
and C Tours, though I think some serious thinking is required to
determine how many teams should be in the B Tour (I suspect 20 might be
a good number, at the present time) This should make the logistics and
finances far easier to plan... And enable a lot more people to find
venues with sufficient facilities to run events of this size.

Another personal opinion: our current venues Bristol, Mansfield and
Birmingham can't really *properly* cope with hosting the current
combined 3 division events - they just about have the pitch space, but
the lack of other facilities is a telling factor, and we've been lucky
that they haven't been too badly overstretched, so far...

In the meantime, it's my opinion that we should better organise and
execute the system we already pretend to have in place (i.e. actually
SPLIT the divisions), to find out if it really IS broken, rather than
rebuild the whole thing from scratch... But, then, mine is just one
opinion amoung many.

It's also my understanding that neither set of TDs for Tour 4 made a
profit after offsetting costs of facilities against team fees.

I wasn't going to get involved with this one, but I've got to disagree
with
Hannah on a point.

>My suggestion would be to limit the B tour to 16 teams

The whole point about splitting the tour was because we had finally hit
48
teams at a Tour tournament. Splitting the last Tour tournament may not
have
been the best one to experiment with since the later tours every year
since
U8 started had lower attendance. Limiting the A tour to 16 teams and
letting
the B tour gorw to 32 teams meant that we should still be a few years
away
from deciding what to do about the teams not being able to get into the
B
tour. We argued for 5 years about whether we should split the tour. We
agreed in principle two years ago but only just had enough bids to try
it
out. Don't reject or radically change something just because it wasn't a
success in every department at the first attempt.

Start looking at which tours should be split for next year. Tour 1 & 2
are
the obvious candidates since that is when we have most student teams
entering, unless Bristol is happy hosting 60+ teams.
