Hi Jillian et al,

After reading the reaction to my response I re-read Ed's mail and then
realised that he'd actually sent his mail to the journo and cc'ed
Britdisc. Hadn't spotted that one initially. Although I still completely
agree with Ed's point of view maybe slating the journo directly wasn't
the most tactful.

What I still can't understand is why so many of you seem to think that
any sort of mention of Ultimate in the press is good publicity. This
article, and it's author, obviously has no intention of considering
Ultimate as a serious sport. It was just a cynical article aiming for
cheap laughs with the general public who have no idea what Ultimate is
and no intention of trying to understand it either.

So I do agree that we'll get nowhere by abusing journalists, but there
are many journos out there, some of them are brilliant, some poor and a
load somewhere in the middle. However, why all of this sycophantic
crooning of a rubbish hack/article that does absolutely nothing to
promote Ultimate as a serious sport?

It was pants. Move on.

Max

Max,

I'm with Tom on this one. We'll never be seen as a credible sport if we
send abuse to journalists who do give us a mention. Seeking to educate
and inform (as Tom did) was a brilliant idea - as you point out
yourself, "in the past, when journalists have taken time to get to know
the sport, the people involved and their adherance to the spirit, some
have turned out half-decent articles portraying the sport for what it
is." He's less likely to want to come and see us now, isn't he?

By the way, did you read the other bits of that same article? We came
off well in comparison to the "surreal, Pythonesque" 'buggy fit' people,
or touch rugby players, identified as an appropriate butt of jokes about
"heading up to Hampstead Heath for some touch with the blokes".

Jillian
