In my opinion the beginner should use the same amount of malts as the experienced brewer, and follow his instructions carefully, at least the first time he tries this receipe. Most likely his mashing is too variable to predict very well what he gets. If not, he is not a beginner, and will not need this advice. Anyway, he will make a good beer out of a reasonable amount of malts, and should be happy about that. If it turns out a bit weaker than expected, not much harm is done. If he really wants to go for some exact gravity numbers, he can always add a bit of extract or sugar to get there. If he really wants to copy the other guys receipe, he ought to copy the mashing as well, to get the same amounts of the same kinds of sugars...
