All these formulas are approximations! None will give you the precise amount of alcohol in your brew - for that you'd need an expensive laboratory analysis. As a first approximation you can even use OG directly: 1.054 -> 5.4 % (plusminus one or two) (OG-FG)/7.5 is a fairly well established formula that I have seen in many books. I guess that is good for plusminus 0.5%, maybe even better. But who cares? It is beer anyway!
