For the first brew, go ahead and guess. My guess for a good guess for you would be 65. Once you have made your mash, and measured the OG, you can calculate back to the efficiency you actually got. Next time you brew, use that for your guess. Repeat a few times, until you see where it is going. The important thing is *not* to get as high an efficiency as possible, but more to keep it constant, so that you can estimate how much malts you'll be needing for your brew. If your efficiency is low, you get (proportionally) more malt taste in your beer, which is not a bad thing. Only big discount breweries worry about a few %-points in mash efficiency. Many things affect the efficiency, so it will change over time. Your mashing method, temperature(s), the way you grind your malt, water, Ph, etc. For the first year, I'd advice you not to worry too much about it. If you go for a specific receipe, correct the OG by adding water or boiling some of it off. It will be beer anyway, and probably damned good beer at that! -H -- Heikki Levanto heikki at indexdata dot dk "In Murphy We Turst"
