Before you return it, check on what temperature it has been calibrated
at (should be printed in it somewhere, possibly in small text), and see
what it shows for plain water at *that* temperature!

Yep, this is simple linear stuff.

You have 22 liters at 72 points => 1584 points total.
These points are now distributed among (22+2) liters of wort,
  1584/24 = 66 points
Therefore, your final wort was at 1.066

Alternatively, you can get the same result by calculating
  (22 * 1072 + 2*1000 )/(22+2) = 1066

As I have said before, and will say again: It will be beer anyway. If
the OG gets a bit heavier, your beer gets a bit stronger, which suits a
dubble quite well. I am of the opinion that the most important question
is if it tastes good or not. (Others may find the various numbers more
important, interesting, and relevant. But probably not more tasty!)
