Since it is a beer kit, it can well be that the kit maker has done something he should not have. There have been rumours about "malt extracts" that were made more of sugar than of malt. Such things would be likely to ferment well down... or something else... When you brew from real grains, you have much more control over things, and can learn much more of them. yes, there are a few more places to make mistakes, but none of them are all too serious.
