Like you say, it is very individual.

Carlsberg makes special brews for Xmas, but those don't seem to have
much spices in them. In the other extreme, some Belgian stuff is spicy
that you think more of a cake than a beer. As usual, best results are to
be found in the middle ground.

Most xmas beers seem to be a bit on the powerful side, perhaps leaning
towards sweetness, and yes, some spices do well in them. This still
leaves open a huge spectrum from pale ales to stouts, barley wines to
tripples, and everything in between. And if you really love an IPA,
nothing will stop you from brewing one for Xmas...

Generally speaking, if you don't have much experience with spices, go
easier on them than what you would expect. Overspicing can make
interesting, but not very drinkable beers, whereas erring on the safe
side,

   it will be beer anyway
