I'm not sure that I understood which tarball on BSD but out of curiosity I installed the dokeos-1.6.3 version on freebsd in a couple of minutes, not counting down load time and as far as I can tell it is operational ( forum, admin, login, registration all seem to work), if that is what you meant.
