I really don't know very much about FreeBSD.
But old servers platforms (release date before 2015) with Linux or even
with Windows is a pain in the a** whe talking about high performance
between the buses.

HP Gen7, Dell 410/x10, are from 2009 and 2010...

Most of the improvement techniques on North-South bridge communications on
those platforms don't work very well.
I had bad experiences with them. RDMA, RoCE, or even DPDK(first releases)
didn't really bypass the north-south controller.
So, the processes got piped until each one "went downstairs", do the job
and come back saying "it's done".

Adjust CPU affinity with that was like fighting against cancer.
Every week/month you need to review everything to be sure that still was in
remission.

I also don't know very well about HP Gen8, but I would recommend you to
check for that.

Talking about Dell, using R230/Rx30 and younger with newer NICs... This is
a paradise!
Even on virtualized environments using SR-IOV.
