So it is expanding the variables one after the other.
Well, I can comment that out, configure and then hand edit Makefile to
get a clean
build. However, make install is still messed up. It tries to install
everything in the root directory. There seems to be a similar problem
in the target install-metadata which reeks havoc with backslashes. I
give up.
