Is the only reason you're doing this in readline because readline changes
the terminal settings, reads a byte at a time from the terminal, and
performs its own display? It doesn't seem ...useful... to use a library
whose job is to perform editing on input lines and defeat that by hiding
the input. Maybe a better place for that functionality is a separate
program.
