No. The latest (as of a few days ago) Dired used with `ls (fileutils) 4.1' on Debian Woody (the current release of the GNU preferred system) is broken as I described. I don't know whether or not ls has had relevant changes applied by Debian, but anyhow if there are well-established incompatible versions, Emacs needs to test for them and DTRT.
