Reasoning is still the same as five years ago, when that bug was filed.
Looking at the number of files on Gentoo mirrors:

I am convinced that you're doing your users a disservice by not
distributing ed in at least one of the popular formats any more.

I can't see how distributing high-quality work for free and in a free format can be seen as a disservice to anybody.

On the contrary, I think you are the one doing a disservice to your users by stubbornly discriminating against the best format for the task of compressing tarballs.
