GNU ed is an upward compatible extension of Posix ed, which is documented
at <https://pubs.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/9699919799/utilities/ed.html>.
The x, y, and z commands are not in Posix, so GNU ed is free to make them
do anything that seems useful. The "Rationale" section on that page
explains the differences between Posix and historic/BSD ed.
