gdb-5.0 linux Stopped (tty output) gdb

gdb-5.0 interacts badly with the shell (bash-1.47) on linux
(i686-pc-linux-gnu).  

Putting gdb in the background with gdb&  results in lots of 
[1]+  Stopped (tty output)    gdb

even though gdb is running with the tcl/tk X interface!
